Fabric Layering Technique
Above all, I create many of my nature pieces with the fabric layering technique. First, I lay the back fabric on a table.Followed by putting the middle batting on top. Next,I create a scene by using fabric and decorative yarns. Finally, a layer of tulle netting covers the whole piece. Subsequently, I free motion quilt the three layers together.
Color! Texture! Movement!
Furthermore, color and texture motivate me to begin an abstract pieced art quilts. In addition,I couch decorative threads and cut them up to use as fabric.
also, the use of tucks adds texture and creates movement. Also redirected fabrics may also be incorporated in the art quilt. Moreover, inspiration comes from seeing the fabrics play with one another. Often my materials are redirected from the San Francisco Design Center away from the landfill.
My Favorite Techniques
My favorite techniques to create movement in my pieces include curved line piecing and Scribble Quilting. I like the color of the quilting threads to reflect or contrast with the fabric creating another level of movement on the surface. A person recently commented on one of my pieces saying, “It dances.” Just the mark I had been aiming for.
